Maqui Berry Diet

Background

The Maqui Berry seems to be gaining popularity in 2010 and it most likely will become the next must have super-berry in the diet and supplement industry. Just as the Acai berry, Mangosteen, and Noni have all had their moment in the sun, so will the Maqui Berry.

Although the Maqui Berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is marketed as some mysterious berry from the mountains of Chili, it is commonly known as the Chilean Wineberry and has been cultivated in the western world since the 1700’s in the UK and since the early 1900’s in the USA. There are also other species of similar wineberries on almost every continent.

Maqui Berries are a dark purple fruit and are said to taste like tart huckleberries and they also produce a dark purple juice that has been used as a dye.

Maqui Berry Diet Basics

Maqui Berries are extremely high in antioxidants, in fact, according to ORAC  they have more antioxidants than any of the other “super-berries” so it is partly due to this evidence that the Maqui Berry is being promoted as a weight loss aid. If you search for Maqui Berries you will find all kinds of sites promoting their use and many have all kinds of claims about Maqui such as “suppresses appetite”, “improves digestion” , or “increases energy”. However, it’s important to note that none of these claims have been researched and studied so the only true statement regarding Maqui is that they are very high in antioxidants.

A Maqui Berry supplement can be incorporated as part of any healthy diet and fitness plan. The dieter will benefit from the antioxidants provided by the Maqui Berry, however, the effects will most likely not be as dramatic as advertised. Those that do experience amazing results are probably benefiting more from the placebo effect than the actual berry itself.

Since most people will not have access to fresh Maqui Berries, it’s important to choose a Maqui Berry supplement that is high quality. This means that it has a high concentration of fruit and not a lot of fillers. Also be sure you are buying from a reputable company as scams are starting to abound as the Maqui gains popularity.

Exercise Recommendations

There are no specific exercise recommendations, but the Maqui Berry should be used as part of a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Maqui Costs

Maqui Berry supplements can range from $35 to $75 for a one month supply and there are all kinds of programs available even MLM schemes for you to sell the berry to others.

Pros

Antioxidants have the following effects on the body;

  • Support healthy aging
  • Neutralize free radicals
  • Protect cells from oxidative stress
  • Assist healthy inflammatory response
  • Support the immune system
  • Support cardiovascular health

Cons

  • Maqui by itself will not promote weight loss.
  • Dieters could be led to believe false promises.
  • Dieters could be scammed.
  • Low quality supplements will have little benefit.

Conclusions

The Maqui Berry is no doubt a powerful fruit when it comes to the antioxidants that it contains, however, the marketing of this product as a diet or weight loss enhancing  product is probably far fetched. Although, if dieters incorporate the Maqui Berry into their existing diet and fitness program they will most likely receive health benefits from the increased antioxidants found in the Maqui supplement.
