Home Chef: Review and Menu

Home Chef is a different kind of meal delivery service. Rather than pre-made meals appearing on your doorstep, Home Chef sends you the ingredients and the recipe.

New menus are created every week, and maintained on the site for months – meaning the meal options are endless.

What You Get

Inside the delivery you will find recipe cards, and fresh ingredients needed for the cook. The box is delivered weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday (your preference).

Portions for up to 6 people can be chosen.

Menus and Recipes

Recipes are available across a number of categories:

  • Seafood
  • Beef
  • Poultry
  • Pork
  • Lamb
  • Vegetarian
  • Dairy-free
  • Soy-free
  • Nut free
  • Gluten free
  • Low calorie

There are even recipes for desserts, breakfasts, and smoothies.

Pricing and Subscriptions

Home Chef offers a subscription-based service. The box arrives weekly with the portioned ingredients and recipes you have selected. The subscription can be paused at anytime, and meals and sizes adjusted. This can be managed from their app (Apple | Android).

The subscription can be cancelled at anytime (but will still run until the end of the term you have paid for).

Your payment is billed weekly (credit card or Paypal). Pricing varies enormously due to the number of different options available.

  • However, for two people, receiving 3 meals each per week – price is around $59.
  • For two people, receiving 5 meals each per week – price is around $79.

Shipping is free.

How Does Home Chef Differ From Other Delivery Services?

It’s hard to find more nutritious and fresh ingredients.

Most other delivery services (such as Nutrisystem) have to sacrifice nutrition and taste to ensure a long shelf-life for their products. Some services like Diet to go offer a superior menu, but you will pay for it.

It’s difficult to compare prices due the multitude of options per service. That said, from Diet-to-go – a lunch and dinner for 5 days is likely to cost you around $129 per week per person (so $260 for two people).

Pros

  • Delivery box is recyclable.
  • Cheaper than other meal delivery services.
  • Excellent meals and menus.
  • More nutritious than delivered diets.
  • Less trips to the grocery store.

Cons

  • You have to cook!

Home Chef is the real deal. With a commitment toward sustainability, nutrition, health, and even donating a portion of sales to hunger projects around the world.

This is a growth industry with many consumers forgoing the hassle of supermarket shopping for meal.  Home Chef is only a few years old, but already has over 400 employees, and serves over half a million meals a month.

I subscribe to Home Chef and my husband and I love it! It makes cooking and meal planning a snap, and we have been very happy with most of the meals. There were a few bombs, but there were far more really delicious and interesting meals.

I started Weight Watchers and requested information from Home Chef regarding the sugar (grams) and saturated fat (grams) content in their meals. They did not have this information. They responded as follows: “If you’re interested in more in-depth information to calculate Weight Watchers points, it may be best to recreate our recipes in a fitness tracker app. A lot of our subscribers are very active on these apps, so oftentimes the recipe will already have been uploaded by a fellow Home Chef enthusiast. :)”. Doesn’t it make sense for them to be able to provide this information for their recipes?

My concern is the very high sodium levels…for that reason alone i would not order any of the meals

I think you’ve misunderstood the concept. These are not high-preservative heat and eat meals, but home cooking kits. The food is real, and sodium levels are normal.

Just had the pecan crusted chicken with carrots and it had no flavor. All that trouble to cook it and a Big Mac would have been better.

Home Chef is a package. The menus they have are great too and very healthy for those that are on diet.
