Noom

Noom is at its core a behavior-modifying weight loss coach that sits on your smartphone.

Using data from millions of customers, Noom combines this to create a one-of-a-kind program for you, that is backed by some very solid research.

Noom is not a diet or a fitness plan – but it can include all those things.

The process begins with a massive quiz. This quiz will force you to dig right into all your habits, the things going on your life that lead to where you got to today. Every answer you give is another data point that Noom uses to build your plan.

Price

Noom offers a choose-your-own-price trial. They experiment with various payment methods – but generally the suggested is $18.37.  But you can offer 50 cents if you want.  This lasts for two weeks.

At this point you must use either credit card or paypal. After the trial time you will then be billed for the full program.

Take the Noom quiz.

As Noom is based on data – the price and length of program varies from person to person.

For me they suggested a six month program at a cost of $6.05 per week (billed all at once).

App Features

Noom offers all the features of a powerful weight loss type app. This includes:

  • Exercise tracking (and linking to every device imaginable).
  • Food tracking (one of the most comprehensive food databases)
  • Recipes (and searching)
  • Weight tracking
  • Fully customized advice articles (there’s the data thing again)
  • Coaching and mentorship.

Dietary Change

Noom has a unique feature in that recommended foods change as you grow into the program. Foods are categorize by color (red – not so good, green – good to go).

The program will train you to recognize foods and portions that aren’t doing you any favors. Over time the categorizing changes as you get better at your food choices. Very clever.

Finishing and Cancelling

At the end of your suggested program length, you can opt to cancel. And hopefully you do, as you’ve adopted new habits.  You still have access to the app (for food logging only), but all the personalized training is no longer available.

Does Noom Work?

The results are quite amazing.

  • One journal reported that 78% of Noom participants lost weight while using the app. BMIs went from 30.2 to 28.1. In addition 22.7% of all app users lost more than 10% of their body weight.
  • In 2015 the University of Sydney studied 28 popular weight loss apps, and Noom came out as number 1.
  • A 2017 study of over 100 Noom users found weight loss of 7.5% at 15 weeks (this included around 6% drop in body fat.
