17 Day Diet

The 17 Day Diet was created by Dr. Mike Moreno, a family practice physician in California.

After being featured on The Doctors TV show and Dr. Phil it has rapidly become one of the hottest weight loss plans for two years running.

17 day diet- morano

The diet involves a series of 17-day cycles with adjustments in the composition of the foods you eat.

Moreno suggests that a weight loss of 10-12 pounds is possible in the first 17 days. He cites recent research showing that rapid weight loss does have long and short-term advantages over the slow weight loss approach.

17 Day Diet Breakthrough Edition

Dr. Morano has enhanced his popular 17 Day Diet with some enhanced options that have proven successful for the 1000’s that have completed his program.

Besides what we have outlined below, The 17 Day Diet Breakthrough Edition is supercharged with following:

  • 3 additional chapters covering supplements, new exercises, and many more success stories.
  • 50 additional recipes.
  • An optional “fast day” to accelerate fat loss using Mike Morano’s liquid cleanse.

17 Day Diet in a Nutshell

In basic terms, the 17 Day Diet is a carbohydrate cycling diet whereby you adjust your intake of carbohydrates in accordance with whatever phase of the diet you are in.

At certain times, you will follow a very low carbohydrate diet while at other times you can enjoy specific foods that are higher in carbohydrates.

According to Dr. Moreno, this has the effect of confusing your metabolism and enhancing the rate at which you are able to lose weight. It also can help to reduce the frustration and boredom that is generally associated with long-term dieting.

The 17 Day Diet includes four cycles:

  1. Accelerate
In this initial phase you dramatically reduce your intake of carbohydrates to promote fat burning, cleansing, and rapid weight loss.
  2. Activate
This 17 Day Diet phase involves carbohydrate cycling, which has the purpose of resetting your metabolism to stimulate fat burning and prevent plateaus.
  3. Achieve
You reintroduce some previously restricted foods and will learn how to develop healthy eating habits.
  4. Arrive
The final phase allows you to maintain your goal weight by eating a healthy diet during the week and indulging in your favorite foods on the weekends.

During all of the four phases of the 17 Day Diet, there is an emphasis on clean eating and the avoidance of sugar and all processed foods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to drink green tea?
Yes, Dr. Moreno believes green tea helps to speed up the metabolism and give the body a boost of antioxidants. Any brand of green tea is fine and it can be hot or cold, but sugar-free.
Can I use artificial sweeteners?
The book promotes the use of Stevia as an all-natural sweetener but doesn’t endorse artificial varieties like Sucralose and Aspartame.
I’m diabetic, is the 17 Day Diet for me?
Dr. Moreno says that his diet is perfect for Type II Diabetics, but Type I Diabetics should be cautious of using his plan. Always consult your physician before beginning any new diet.
Can vegetarians or the gluten intolerant do the diet?
Yes, the book has many alternate suggestions for vegetarians as well as those on the gluten-free diet.
Can I drink wine while completing the cycles?
There are provisions for wine in cycle 3, but Dr. Moreno says that the 17 Day Diet isn’t about depriving you. Wine in cycles 1 or 2 will just slow down your progress, but not ruin the diet.
Can I use this diet to get rid of my baby weight?
Dr. Moreno says that since the 17 Day Diet isn’t missing nutrients, it’s fine for a woman who are breastfeeding and want to lose the baby weight. He advises mothers to consult with their doctors to be sure it will fit with their particular health histories.

Recommended Foods and Food App

Eggs, turkey breast, chicken breast, seafood, yogurt, grapefruit, berries, lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomato, cucumber, asparagus, green tea.

The book contains recipes that Moreno claims are quite easy to make, but also suggests taking out a delivered meal plan from Bistro MD — but this can get expensive.

The 17 Day Diet also has released a cookbook to assist dieters in preparing meals that fit with the program.

There is a helpful iPhone app available that gives dieters 100, 17 Day Diet recipes at their fingertips.

These recipes are formulated to be tasty yet easy to prepare. This is helpful because the app incorporates all of the recommended foods into the recipes while eliminating all of the restricted foods and ingredients.

1 cup green tea

A Healthy Lower-Carb Diet

The 17 Day Diet involves adjusting your intake of carbohydrates, fat, protein and calories over a series of 17-day cycles, which may have the effect of boosting metabolism and preventing the plateaus that are common with most diets.

Even though the plan was created to help dieters avoid holiday weight gain, The 17 Day Diet can be followed at any time when fast and effective weight loss is desired. However dieters must be aware that permanent changes in eating patterns, lifestyle habits, attitudes and beliefs are essential if weight loss is to be maintained.

It’s very difficult for me to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Can I get coconut water instead of some of the glasses?

  2. A.M.

    Hi

  3. Paula

I cheated badly over the weekend and today did a fast day! Is there any benefit to doing more than one fast day in a row when you’ve been bad like that?

    • Ted

no, you’re just risking slowing down your metabolism.

      • Mark

WRONG! The metabolism doesn’t slow down for the first 72 hours and after that the slowing down is very slight.

I’d recommend you read up about intermittent fasting and fasting overall.

  4. Vicki

    Pam,

I only lost 5 lbs. the first 17 days and am now on day 22 and haven’t lost any more weight.

  5. Kerri

Can I drink coffee on this diet? What about coffee with a small amount of low fat acidophilus milk, no sweetner or maybe a half a packet of Truvia?

  6. Pam

I lost 12 lbs in the first 14 days of phase 1, then lost only 2 more lbs thru the end of phase 2. I went back to phase 1 (as the book suggested) & am now at day 5 ( 39 days total) on the second round of phase 1. I have even gained upt to 3 lbs in one day on occasion. All of this while being very very strict with the diet plan! My exercise is very limited to to severe lower back/leg pain for which I am being treated with physicial therapy & accupuncture & steroid injections but no narcotics. I am very frustrated at this point. I wonder if anyone else has similiar “plateau” issues or suggestions!?

    • KIP

I’m sorry to say that Corticosteroids will decrease you ability to lose weight. In fact, steroids will increase your blood sugar for a while after injections. Not sure how long the side effects of the steroids will last, but I hope your inflammation will be greatly reduced. Don’t give up!

I have started the 17 day diet 11 days ago and have lost 12 pounds so far. I am within 30 pounds of my ideal weight so I wasn’t expecting the big loss. My husband started 4 days ago and has lost 6 pounds. It’s all about choices and I choose to be smaller and feel better about myself. The food is really good, lots of variety. I think it really helped to read the book first to get a good understanding of what I was about to do. I have never been more pleased with a plan. Looking forward to the next phases. Did anyone have a headache the first few days?

  8. Rachel

    Hi Kim
I started this diet on feb 1st and have lost 8 pounds. I do not follow the menus, I just follow the rules. The reason it DOES work is that cutting out carbs and eating more protein and veggies causes you to want to eat less, thus lose weight. I agree that the book is a bit overpriced and full of a lot of menus, but I find it works. I was a huge carb and sweet eater, and I have no cravings. I didn’t even go through withdraw.

  9. kathy

    lose not loose sorry

  10. Kathy

I started the diet Monday and it is now Friday. I was ok until yesterday when I felt very very sick. I am a diabetic and I have to watch my sugar but overall I don’t think this diet is good for me. I did loose 5 pounds already but I can’t stand this feeling of being sick. I am still trying to stick with somewhat to this diet just adding in a carb or two so I don’t feel so bad. Does anyone think this is a bad thing?

  11. Mike

It was great that you lost 10 lbs in 17 days! Check your calorie consumption and make sure you are not taking in more that you really need with the level of exercise you are doing.
I remember 1 post that said she lost 42 lbs in 2 months by holding the calories around or under 1000 and increased the exercise time. Good luck!

  12. JJ

Hi everyone… I’m looking for some encouragement… I’m on day 8 of Cycle 2, and I’ve been at a standstill with my weight since shortly after starting Cycle 2. I keep hoping to realize a big drop one of these days, but it hasn’t happened yet. I lost 10 lbs. the first 17 days and was so excited. I like the 17 day diet, and it really isn’t drastically different from my normal diet. It has taught me to be more aware of what I’m eating and when. I do encourage people to try consult their physician and try the diet. I’d also like to add that 2 weeks prior to starting the diet I cut out all sweets and bread… I think it made the transition much easier.

  13. Marie

I just wanted to share my excitement about the 17 day diet. First, YOU HAVE TO BUY THE BOOK that I agree with. It is easy reading and I can’t tell you how many times I have gone back and re-read and referenced and thought about what it said. Second, I am so looking forward to the journey with the rest of you. I am currently in day 4 of phase 1…yes I know not very far along…..but I have already lost 5 pounds!!!!!! I really did not want to get on the scale this morning…..but I just could not stop myself and so glad I did. My husband brought home a big box of the most delicious looking raspberry doughnuts last night and I swear they were calling to me all night long…….I told myself the only way to not eat 2 of them for breakfast was to get on the scale…..and so I did. Well let me tell you 5 pounds in 4 days…….raspberry yummy’s were no temptation to me today. I encourage those of you who are on the fence about purchasing the book to make the investment. Yes the information is common sense stuff that one could glean from a decade or so of research….but why waste your time when someone has already gone to all of the trouble and done it for you? It is less than the cost of three trips to McDonalds and will change your life forever. I can’t wait to continue reading each of your Blogs during this time together and I hope you will look forward to mine.

    Much Encouragement From Fellow Dieter,
    Marie

  14. Mike

I would not eat these as they are low in calories but very high in sodium. If it is something you cannot live without I would certainly restrict to a couple per day. Good luck!

  15. jjones

Thank you.Can you eat pickles or pepperoncinis?

  16. Mike

Carrots are listed under cleansing vegetables and should be
    fine.

  17. Mike

I would move on to cycle 2 as every other day is the same as cycle 1. If you are watching the portions and exercising x 2 I would keep going. I feel the weight will drop. You will surely see results if you stay focused. Good luck..You can do it!

  18. jjones

I have a question. Today is day 1 and for dinner it says any of the listed veggies. Carrots are listed but high in carbs and it says no carbs after 2. Is it ok To have them with dinner?

  19. vicki

Thanks Mike. I’ve been exercising twice a day. I sure don’t want to go to phase 2 because I haven’t lost as much as I would like to. Not too sure about moving to stage 2 even though the book says to.

  20. Mike

Try increasing exercise and decreasing food portions. This worked for me. Stick with it.. Good luck!

  21. Mike

Cycle 1 is the same each day for the first 17 days. Then cycle 2 is adding 2 starches ever other day before 2pm for 17 days. Good luck. I have just started cycle 2 and am down 8 pounds. It works!

  22. Vicki

I’ve been on the diet 16 days and have only lost 5 lbs. I am so discouraged. I’ve followed the diet completely. Very, very discouraged.

  23. vanessa

Does the GREEN TEA need to be DECAF or regular?

    Thanks!

  24. Margaret little

I am on cycle2, day 8. I have been gaining .5 every couple of days. Initially on cycle1 I lost 14 pounds. Any suggestions to why I am not losing?

  25. jojobean55

I started this diet on Jan. 1st. I have lost a total of 18 pounds so far. I am absolutely happy with this diet. It is simply a way of life. I do not feet deprived, I have more energy, and I am just happier. I like the easiness of the diet. It’s all about keeping sugar out of your diet and simply having common sense. If you follow this, you WILL lose weight. I have a sister, brother-in-law, mother and daughter that are also doing this diet. Each and every one of them are losing and sticking with it.

  26. Cindy

The body ordors are from the detoxing you are going through – it can last the entire 17 days. Mine was my skin began really breaking out and I have barely had a breakout in my entire 54 years. It is just all those toxins and and garbage leaving your body. It will level out once your are “clean”. Sometimes too much meat and not enough fruit and veggies can do it also – like Atkins – make sure you are eating all the varities of stuff. It is easy to eat the meat to keep you full. Best of luck!

  27. Cindy

Good for you!! You just need to go back and re-read the part about your “fullnes meter”. It will help you determine when you can/should stop eating.

  28. Cindy

    Hi Tweetiepie,

Considering your husband’s issues, you need to read the book by Dr. Esselstyn (Dr. Oz is an avid supporter), “Prevent and Reverse Heart Diease” ($9.99 on Amazon). It is shocking and eye opening, but it could turn your husband’s issues completely around before they go too far. I have been stunned by the studies in the book discovering that 2/3 of the world has NO heart diease – it is just us Americans. Going forward I am going to work to change my life completely to a plant-based diet – this way of life is not for sissy’s – it is tough, but there are over 20 years of clinical studies with patients he introduces you to and takes you through their history to date – they would have been dead without him. This is the Dr. that President Clinton saw and has completely turned around his heart and health issues and lost 28 lbs to boot. It’s all about one step at a time and the 17 day diet is the first step for a lot of us. Stick with it. Good luck to the two of you!!!

  29. Cindy

Since 12/20/10 I have lost 29 lbs on this diet (yes, in about a month). It is so easy and filling and you feel amazingly energized. Even though I already knew everything I have read in the book, it was the thing that got me going in the right direction – all I had to do was what he told me – no thinking – no stressing – just follow it to the letter – no brainer. I have started working out everyday with Leslie Samsone’s walk at home tapes. I couldn’t even breath or get through the 1 mile tape and then I was able to do the 2 mile tape and then I could do it twice a day and now I have just purchased her 5 mile and pilates tapes. I have never been able to sick with anything like this. It is like it is the natural balance your body is looking for. I was a serious sugar addict and have had several bags of valentine chocolates around the house for two weeks to give to my kids on 2/14 and have not even touched them, nor had the the desire to touch them – in the past they would have been gone within days. If this can work for me, if can work for almost anyone. Oh yeah, it takes guts or balls or whatever you want to call it to break out of your sorry rut and step up – been there, done that. Woman up!! It’s about committment…to yourself.

  35. dietgirl

river girl – my whole family is on this diet and no body has experienced any type of oder. I’m not sure why that would happen?

  36. Earl

I am confused. How many days do I do the first cycle? (accelerate)? Or, do I do cycle 1 for the first day, then cycle 2 on the second day, cycle 3 on the 3rd day? etc..
Or, do I just do cycle 1 for 17 days, then do cycle 2 for the next 17 days? What confuses me is when I read that people on this diet are eating what they want on the weekends! That completely iliminates the direction of only eating cycle 1 for the first 17 days. Please explain. Thanks!

  37. RiverGirl77

Way to go everyone! For those who are struggling with not losing like you want to remember that overall you are making healthy changes to your life and you may not see it on the scale right away but you will FEEL so much better. The first few days are terrible, my husband was like a bear with a sore bum for 2 weeks because he felt so bad. I think this is because the body is addicted to sugar and carbs and it is going through withdrawal. Has anyone noticed changes like bad breath or body odor??? I won’t be fat anymore but I am gonna stink!

  38. RiverGirl77

Mike, it is important that you do not limit your portions too much. If you follow the diet you are in most cases eating 800-1100 calories per day any less and your body may go into starvation mode and will not drop the weight as quickly. I am just finishing cycle 2 and have lost 26lbs my husband has lost 19lbs (only 4lbs from his goal weight) we did not limit our protien portions at all in fact I have been eating much more chicken, turkey and fish per serving than I ever did before. Make sure you are watching your sodium intake as this may also be a reason for slow weight loss…water retention. Hope this helps and stick with it!!

  39. dietgirl

I dont really have time to excersise I try but other diets I have lost weight more quickly I feel like the weight should be falling off of me

  40. Mike

I had some problems also in losing. I increased my exercise which is walking and also adjusted down my food portions. Only then did I see the weight drop more rapidly. Stick with it and the weight will drop!

  41. Jaime23

This diet has worked well for me so far and I enjoy being on it unlike diets ive tried in past. I don’t have time to cook so I went with the meal plan delivery for convenience. The food is delicious and it gets to me on time. If you don’t like to cook or have no time I suggest you do it.

  42. marie

dont leave the tea bag for more than a minute in the hot water tipped fast.

  43. Laurie

It sounds to me that you just don’t have what it takes to stick to a diet. And want someone to do it for you because you don’t have the strength to do i yourself. Too bad soo sad. It ain’t gonna work. More people are having success than you did. Because of you I am more determined than ever to try it and succeed at it & so will others like me.

  44. dietgirl

  47. Renee

    Hello Everyone,

Can someone tell me if you can drink the diet green tea made by lipton instead of the hot green tea?

  48. CJ

do I have to eat eggs? I have only done it one day. I eat salmon and vegetables for breakfast

  49. CJ

I am on my fourth day. I am eating meat (chicken, fish or turkey)vegetables (green) for each meal. 2 apples a day and 2 yogurts. I bring carrots and celery to work to munch on. I am finding it to be too much food for me. How important is it not to skip a meal if you are already full?

  50. marie

Hi, I got the book ,I love it but my only problem is the egg I hate looking at a big (embrio) or the slime part of the egg. Can I sustitude to powdered egg.

  51. Mike

I really like the low sodium miso soup in place of the yogurt some times. Stick with this and you should see amazing results.
    Good luck!

  52. Dietgirl

Also My mom My aunt and me are all on this diet together. My mom was 174 5’1 she has now been on this diet for 2 days and lost 5 lbs. My Aunt was 215 5’3 and also has been on this diet for 2 days and lost 4 lbs. I am 135.6 5’4 and in 2 days lost !.2 1bs. I am suspecting losing weight slower because I am thinner then both of them. We are starting our third day. It is not easy the meals are simple but you really have to be disciplined and in the mind set of it all. I cant wait for the 17 days to be up and to see our results for cycle 1

  53. dietgirl

so you use the same yogurt as me? I guess I should go in the store and ask if they have kefir. Last time i looked all i found was soy milk and lactose free.

  54. Mike

The nonfat plain yogurt you are describing is what I normally use. I have found that using a chopped apple or whole blueberries makes it much more palatable. Also I have used a tsp or two of my favorite fruit spread. I choose the variety with no ADDED sugar. Good luck!

  55. Mike

Kefir is a dairy product. There is alternative kefir that is nondairy such as soy kefir and coconut kefir. I have never used these. Sometimes I like to use 1/2 cup of saurkraut or cup of low sodium miso soup as an alternative for my probiotics.

  56. Tweetiepie610

@Cindy….BRAVO!!!! Hallehluer Sister..I was wondering when someone was going to comment on “the Haters”..you beat me to the punch girl…good for you. This site is intended for feedback good or bad…but Lord knows we have enough negativity in this world…its nice to know that “those of us” struggling with weight issues can share thoughts, ideas and support for each other to help MOTIVATE one another to live a better and healthier lifestyle so that we can live longer, healthier and happier lives. Good luck to everyone taking this journey to a healthier and happier life. Muah…

I refer to myself these days as being a “professional dieter” I have tried many, from protein drinks to calorie counting & probably what the “new diet” of the year would discribe it well. I wouldn’t even want to start calculating of what amounts of monies I’ve invested throughout the years. But I too have purchased the 17 day diet & I already have lost 9 pounds during the first 8 days I have committed to this diet. I feel soooo good, ambious with energy that I was desperately seeking to have once again. I have not only learned of new receipes but they are easy to follow & don’t have the taste of diet food. It’s teaching me to change my lifestyle & eating healthy, makes you feel healthy! Most importantly, I am one that DOES not want to be taking any kind of medication or ejecting insulin into my body. My family history consists of my dad, aunts & now my niece (just turned 10 yrs. old)that have diebetes & Dr, Moreno based this diet of knowing a lady with diebetes, in which he began to walk with her which formed to a group known as “Walk with Doc” now how sincere & committed is that? It has been a great seller for me!!!!!!!!

  58. dietgirl

thanks mike! can you use any type of non dairy products or does it have to be kefir? I dont really know waht it is I am assuming it is just a non dairy product. can someone help me out and let me know if my assumptions are right? thank you so much!… also I really hate plain yogurt so i got a non fat flavored yogurt im pretty sure the calories is 90 the carbs is 15 and the sguar is 11. I dont know if im damaging my weight lost by eating this type of yogurt. If someone knows please help me .. we are all disciplined people in this together =)

  59. Mike

Did you exercise portion control as well as eliminating the carbs in the accelerate phase? I have had results but not even close to yours. I just ate as much protein as I wanted and this must be why my results are stunted. On day 12 and have lost but not as much as hoped for. I am going to try and use portion control and hope this will help.

  60. Tweetiepie610

@Mia…Although I have just started Day 1 yesterday (my Hubby and I..yay lol)…I stopped eating Sugar 2 weeks ago and can already see the HUGE difference in my stomach and the way I feel (my stomach was always bloated) I have always been thin..but since I turned 40 (now 46) my metabolism drastically changed. I weighed between 120-125..and was always able to eat anything…once I hit 40 I could not stop eating sugar and the pounds on the butt, stomach and Boobs haaaa I never had big boobs…I do now..lol I am at 155 lbs and feel horrible with my weight…its too much for my small frame…I am 5’4 and still have a small frame but the boobs, butt and gut are a HOT MESS lol SUGAR is definately the cause of my weight gain…I am too embarassed to tell you how much sugar I consume…I am very surprised that I am not a Diabetic..anyway…I totally agree with everything you said Mia on EVERYTHING…its about Personal Responsibility about your health and being healthy….I and my Husband made the decision that we wanted to see our sons (19 and 15) graduate College, be successful, get married and eventually have children. We won’t be able to do that with how we were living our lives. I read Dr. Moreno’s bood twice…I luv it and can see myself living my life on his suggesgtions. Good luck to everyone…

  61. Tweetiepie610

@Hellenar…I recommend Zumba…you can go at your own pace and then advance if and when you are ready….I luv BETO who is the creator of Zumba….you can find the DVD’s on Zumba.com…..Good Luck….I lost 15 lbs. just by excersizing to Zumba…..It is so much fun…I discovered it about 8 months ago…I have not stopped exersizing to the DVDs and no matter how tires I am at the end of the day…once you do Zumba…you have a jolt of energy….Enjoy….

You are entitled to your opinion…there now do you feel better? I hope so…now for everyone else that is happy with the book thus far or that is still waiting to see the results of its effectiveness, allow us to do that don’t ruin it for us. Have a great day! Muah…

  65. wendy

I think this 7 day diet is GREAT, first 4 days I have lost 7 1/2 lbs. If you are like me and love your breads, it is hard at first, but stick with it, it is worth it.

  66. Ms. Sick of America's Diet

I don’t think the book is the problem; I think you are. I am a 35 year-old stay at home mom and look better than 20 year-old’s because I have changed the way I eat. The list of meals you listed for the day is exactly what a female should eat to remain at optimum health. It is not small amounts but exactly appropriate amounts. Maybe you should discontinue following the average American obesity heart-attack diet and give this one, that is developed by someone who actually knows a thing or two about the human body, a try; it could change your life!

  67. Mike

You can find kefir and lactose free products in the dairy sections of most grocery stores.Almost all food stores carry these now. If you cant find in regular grocery chain store try ethnic markets or health food stores.

  68. Mike

You will not find sugar free yogurt. The Greek yogurts have the least amount of sugar. I use the store brand of nonfat plain yogurt for the most part. The yogurts with added vanilla or other flavorings including fruits have the most sugars.

  69. Tweetiepie610

Did you order it from Dr. Phils website?

  70. Tweetiepie610

@Dietgirl….Good question…I just started yesterday…I am in the same dilemma looking for the same products…please advise if you get a response. Thanks…

  71. Tweetiepie610

Hello…You are so RIGHT…it definately is all in your head…its a mind set….I truly believe that if you want to accomplish a goal, you have to change your approach. It is all mental. Good luck…I just bought the 17 Day Diet Book…I loved reading it and am now putting it to work. My Husband and I are doing it together…He wants to loose 50 lbs. and I 30 lbs. today is our second day. Yikes…I think the hardest times are going to be the evenings…but we are sticking with it…we were starving last night and decided to make a nice cup of Green Tea…..and felt better. We are determined that this is definately a lifestyle change for us as it has to be. My Husband has high cholesterol, high blood pressure and colitus…grrr lol he has been on Meds for 6 years and I want him off of them because I know if he looses weight and excersises regularly again, he will not need to take medication. I just went back to College and am going for an Associates Degree in Medical Assisting….this semester I am taking Anatomy and Physiology….lets just say that you learn to appreciate good health and what you put in your body….it was life changing for me…..I knew that we had to make a likestyle change. I am Dr. Phil’s biggest fan…been watching him since his Oprah days (been watching Oprah from day 1) and am now hooked on The Doctors….when they introduced Dr. Moreno and the 17 Day Diet Book….it was an “AHA” moment for me…and I am taking this journey with my Husband of 22 years….yay for us…..muah to Dr. Moreno….I know that this will work for us because we are determined to succeed.

  72. Kim

This your opinon, but it seems to working for a higher percentage of people, really sorry you were disapointed.

  73. dietgirl

Hi! I just started this diet today> it seems pretty simple. I am very disciplined with dieting and being strict. I do have a question does anyone know where you can get kefir, acidophilus milk, and sugar free flavored yogurt. I looked all over in the store and could not find a “sugar free yogurt” the most i found was non fat or low fat yogurt.

  74. Cindy

For kicks, I went through Cycle 2 and calculated a day of calories with the carbs added in – each day is about 873 – under 900. No wonder we are losing weight. Don’t get me wrong, I am the biggest fan of this program. It has changed my life. I am down 42 pounds, which has taken two months. I have never had anywhere near this success with any other program.

  75. susan

Be Caeful! I ordered the book and had charges up to $3000 on my credit card. Was called by the bank and the charges were stopped. Never got the book

  76. Kim W

I don’t know if my first comments went through but I feel it is important to let you know that it is a total waste of money. I wish I hadn’t boughten the book and the Dvd’s. You dont learn anything new and the reason your losing weight is because the meals are small, protein filled, and everyone knows you should drink 8 glasses of water and 3 cups of green tea a day because green tea is known on its own to help you lose weight. Dr. Phil should be ashamed of himself for promoting this book, but he must be getting a cut because he talks about it every day and has had him on twice. Just eat proteins, salad, vegetable, no fruit after 2, yogurt, eggs, drink water and green tea and you will be all set. What a waste of $30.00!!!

  77. Kim W

I just got the book today and what a waste of money. Dr. Phil must be getting a cut because this diet is nothing new. The reason your losing weight is your eating very small meals. Here is an example from the book. Day 1 breakfast: 2-scrambled egg white, 1/2 grapefruit or other fresh fruit and 1 cup of green tea. Lunch: Large green salad topped with tuna; drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil or flaxseed oil and 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and 1 cup of green table. Dinner: Plenty of grilled chicken with liberal amounts of any vegetable from the list, steamed or raw and 1 cup of green tea. Snacks: 6 oz. of sugar-free plain yogurt mixed with 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar-free jam or other probiotic serving and 1 serving of fruit from the list.

  78. Yolanda

What is the device that you are currently using to help with your weight lost?

  79. Joanie

Your right about the sugar in Yogurt. Still way better then eating ice cream. My husband and I are following this diet to a T and it is a life change for a healthy eating habit. I love it and find it so easy. We are on day 12 and I have lost 7.5 lbs and my husband has lost 11 lbs. Best part is I am not craving any of the bad foods we use to eat daily. Good riddance I say!

  80. Joanie

Debbie, I absolutely HATE any Tea but my Husband had me try Diet Green tea w/ginseng & honey MANGO
No sugar, no calories and taste like a Mango fruit drink. I don’t love it because my brain keeps saying ( yuk, Tea) but I don’t hate it either. Plus the more I drink it, the better it gets. Try it. You might be surprised.

  81. AEC

A serving of fruit such as berries is 1 cup. A grapefruit serving is 1/2 a grapefruit. Oranges or apples is one piece of frit. But the 1 cup serving is a good level.

  82. AEC

I don’t think you can use the ICBINB, although it’s not addressed and if you’re losing well I wouldn’t worry about it. You can use the spray oils like Pam, though, and they have a butter flavor which I use all the time. It may sound gross but when I have popcorn (not on this diet) I always spray it with this rather than using butter or even the ICBINB.

  83. AEC

Amen. I am 64 and able to brisk walk 3-4 miles a day. But I cannot do this video. I wasted my $$ on it. I’ll keep walking and doing my Leslie Sansone Walk DVDs a few times a week. Any exercise is better than no exercise. I just wish the DVD had a notice about activity level.

  84. AEC

You can have 2 snacks a day. Up to you how you want them, as long as you don’t have fruit after 2 pm. I usually have a fruit just before 2 and save my 2nd probiotic (yogurt) for dessert or night snack. And you can munch on as much allowed veggies that you want all day. I find after having the protein breakfast, I’m not hungry until lunch so don’t need a morning snack.

  85. Mike

After 7 days on the diet I have calculated that we need to stick to a 1200 cal per day for a target weight 104 days out. I have dropped 4.8 lbs in this initial period and my wife has lost 6.5 lbs. I am happy with the results thus far. My wife had lost 30 lbs over a year period previous to beginning the 17 day diet. I am close to my ideal weight but she has several months to get to her desired weight. We have always eaten healthy and no junk food. I have tried losing weight previously with many different eating methods but I can say this is the only method that has given me the results I have wanted. The results speak loudly for this eating method. I look forward to continuing on a path that gives true results. This works!

  86. Marie

I saw one question about vegetarian diet but does anyone know what the alternatives are for people who don’t eat any meat or fish? Also what if someone has an autoimmune/inflammatory disease? Using naturopathic treatments but wondering if all the dairy (seems to be quite a bit with yoghurt and cottage cheese) would cause any allergic type response.

  87. helenar

    I meant DVD

  88. helenar

I find the 17 Day Diet Exercise DVD to be difficult. It moves along very fast and you don’t have a chance to learn the steps and it goes on to another exercise. Can anyone recommend a good exercise DVD? I am 57 and not familiar with the various exercise steps. Thanks.

  89. KC

    @Mary
I am sorry that you were affected by breast cancer. I hope you are recovering well. I wanted to sugest a forum where you could find support for weight loss and other issues that affect women it is secrect society of women dot com. founded by Lisa Ling formerly of the view. many areas are discussed that you can find support and get ideas from others.

    Best wishes to you.

  90. Mike

I had the same problem until I found out all yogurt has sugar on the label.I usually choose plain nonfat yogurt and they all have similar sugar contents but not ADDED sugar. The best I have found is Fago 0% greek yogurt but always costlier.

Good luck and this diet (I prefer to it as a structured healthy way of eating) REALLY works. My wife and I have been on it for 6 days and she has lost 6 lbs and I 5 lbs so far.

  91. Cindy

    Hi Terri,

I would love to know where you are in this journey and how much weight you have lost and if it is still easy for you to keep up with it. As one of the original people tested, you have more time under your belt than the rest of us. Adding the carbs is making me nervous. Are you working out? If so, doing what, how long and how many days a week?

    Thanks.

  92. Cindy

I am about half way into Cycle 2. I am finding it stressful to add the carbs in and am not seeing the weight go as quickly, which is to be expected. I have had to double my works to get the pounds going and I have a good bit to go so it’s not like I am near my goal weight. The good news is that I remain totally committed to changing my lifestyle and wouldn’t even consider going back and continue to feel great and full of energy. Working out is so much easier. I saw a tip that said if you are tired before a work out to drink water and it would make you feel better. Seems to work.

Anyone out there into Cycle 2 yet? Love to hear from you and how it is going for you.

Also, has anyone calculated the number of calories you have been eating in a day? I have been doing so for the last week and it is well under 1000 calories and I am following the plan to the letter. This is way too low for long term.

  93. Cindy

I would start from the beginning again. The purpose of this cycle is to cleanse your body of toxins – since you blew it over the weekend and put toxins back in, you need the full 17 days to clear them out again.

  94. Leigh

It is a VERY valid question. Evidently, you haven’t tried to find it. It is very easy to find low fat, but sugar free is another story and low fat and sugar free is almost impossible. I heard that Walmart carried Blue Bunny and it is supposed to be both.

  95. tina

hi i been in the diet for 5 days cycle 5 i lost 4 pounds feel better with more energy …i really recomend this diet you have to have willpower and be positive is a healthy journey …trust me …good luck to those who want to change to a healthy life style —-:)

  96. m

I’m so glad to have found this site. I am on day 9 on the diet and down the same amount of weight 9pounds. I love it! So motivating. I do have some ???. I have followed the plan BUT not following each day exactly. For instance, I made the soup and ate it daily for lunch until it was gone. So my ? is do you have to follow the days exactly??? Also, having trouble getting all the food eaten in one day …it’s so much and not always hungry. I do eat at each meal though–so is that okay? Thanks so much! I am going to make this a life plan NOT a diet! I feel sooo good from eating healthy like I should:)

  97. Joe A Darville

I ordered the book (17 day diet) and the meal plan two weeks ago and have not received it. Please check this for me and let me have a answer.

  98. Jane

Mary is that a serious question? The supermarket. Why wouldnt it occur to you to check before asking such a silly question?

  99. Mary

I just started the diet. Where can you find sugar-free yogurt?

  100. Becky Wagner

I tried your diet and became very weak and my legs were like mush. I tend to have low sugar sometimes even eating regularly. Can I still try this diet but add more fruit and if so what kind of fruit?

I have ordered your book and I had borrowed my friend’s book to get started.

Let me know. Maybe I need a different diet? I would like this one, but I have to have energy and feel healthy.

    Thanks.

  101. tbowie

Thanks! I just felt like I messsed everything up. But… I guess I will try to think positive.

  102. helenar

Do not start Phase 1 from the beginning. Just get back on to Phase 1 and then move on to Phase 2. Don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s better to get back into it and move on. Good luck.

  103. tbowie

Hi, I started the 17 day diet last week and blew it over the week end. Do I start over on day one or continue on. I’m not sure what to do. Any advice?

  104. mary applegate

i read that truvia is allowed to on the first 17 days…its on the page that says “enjoy these in moderation”

  105. mary applegate

    don’t think so…

  106. mary applegate

i wouldn’t do it…drink a sparkling water maybe and a twist of lime or lemon, if you don’t and you do gain a bit of the weight or not loose at all…will you be disappointed? if so…choose the water.

  107. mary applegate

sounds if your body is getting the toxins out. if you have reached a goal….now would be the time to go treat yourself to a facial! enjoy!!

  108. mary applegate

oops i forgot to say i have only been on this diet 6 days and my husband is down 10.

  109. mary applegate

i am sorry….but i have been looking and looking for the amt. of berries and grapes are a serving??? please help quick!! i want to add some to my diet, but i found nowhere in the book that said “how many” = a serving…i have been on this diet and have done all the things faithfully …down 12.7 pounds!!!!!!!!!

  110. Cindy

I started this program on 12/20. I have always been blessed with a perfectly clear completion. Suddenly, I am breaking out all over my face – I am 50 so I’m no teenager. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think it is my body getting rid of the toxins?? Any suggestion greatly appreciated. Thanks

  111. Lindsey

Thanks for the tips Janie! =)

  112. Cheri

Try using green tea that has a flavor in it and add truvia. Not bad!!

  113. Cindy

I was a party girl too when I was your age – but a skinny beautiful girl also. Didn’t think about the sugar in alcohol. It is loaded with sugar…that’s why is not allowed. Be careful sweet girl, you aren’t thinking about it now, but that alcohol will age you quickly!! 🙂

  114. Cindy

Congrats on your weight loss. I have now lost 21/22 pounds as well. I haven’t heard anything about the butter stuff, however, if it is your goal to eat clean, it is processed with stuff you can’t pronounce, but it is a very good idea. I have heard it said that you shouldn’t eat anything with more than five ingredients (multiple spices don’t count). I want to find out about the butter spray because it would be great on baked potatoes, right?

  115. Cindy

OH Sue!!! Don’t stop. Of course it is hard the first few days, but your body will quickly respond and your energy will zoom and your taste buds will change. You should stick with it, the results are amazing!!

  116. Cindy

You need to have two probiotics everyday w/ or w/o fruit. You have picked a good one – 7 sugars is very good. It is almost impossible to find low fat & sugar free together – I haven’t been able to find one yet. So I go for the lower sugar, but never go over 100 calories and try to stay at 80 calories.

I watched a special yesterday on PBS by a doctor that specialized in intestional issues. She said the more probiotics you can get into your gut the better. You couldn’t eat enough yogurt in a day to get you to where you need to be, which is about 15 BILLION a day. You can buy probiotic supplements = they should have at least 10 different strains and should contain lots of “L” and “B” named strains. She said you have to fix your gut first and then everything will follow and that if you don’t change your eating habits and proper digestion, you can work out all you want, but you insides still need help.

  117. Cindy

MP, we are kindred souls. I could have (and was) living on sugary foods. This will gross out a lot of people, but I would have no problem waking up to a Mt. Dew and chocolate covered cherries. I was moody and irritable. It was impossible to wake up in the morning and I never wanted to do anything. I am guessing I was in a sugar coma!! I feel unbelievable and have more energy than I can harness. I am so alert and clear headed. I needed this kick in the butt to change my life before it killed me. This book saved my life. It’s different for everyone, but this is the only thing that has worked for me.

Congratulations on your weight loss!!! It is so funny because so many people are losing 7, 9, ll pounds and are disappointed. Remember the days when losing two pounds a week would be a thrill. Celebrate every single pound!!

  118. Cindy

Duh…sorry, Brenda. I missed your question completely…you can have Truvia. It’s great.

  119. Cindy

Brenda, I am sorry to tell you that none of that is allowed. Diet sodas are keeping you overweight and killing you. I was a devote Mt. Dew addict. To this day, if I have to chose a last meal, it will include Mt. Dew. I miss it so much, but those days are behind me. I wouldn’t even consider putting it in my body again. I have never been a coffee or tea drinker. You can only have green tea – no milk/creamers. I know I am supposed to, but I don’t drink the tea…just tons of water, which I have developed a natural thirst for, thankfully.

I have been doing a lot of rearch on the internet about “clean eating” and the more I read, the more committed I am about living this lifestyle. It is terrifyinng what we Amercians have done and are continuing to do to our bodies. There are some really good recipes and cookbooks you can buy. Tosca Reno has a website that is outstanding as is The Gracious Pantry.

I have a sweet tooth, which I have fortunately seemed to have lost, but there are tons of wonderful natural, clean and even organic dessert recipes to eat. Remember…organic doesn’t necessary mean healthy. Lots of organic products are processed. Stay away from any processed foods. Hope this helps.

  120. Cindy

Honestly, I was very nervous about adding in the carbs. The first day I had a 1/2 cup of brown rice with chicken and aspargus and tomatoes. I could be crazy, but I swear that once I hate the rice, I was hungry all day and couldn’t get satisfied. I have been working out a lot – walking at home with Leslie Sorneno about 4 miles a day…so maybe that is what is really making me hungry. I am continuing to lose weight, we will see what happens over the next week.

  121. brenda klanke

it just places the snacks after dinner, yesterday i forgot to eat my second friut before 2 so i just had 1 friut yesterday.I am on day 3 i have lost 3lbs already,I only have 19lbs to loose so I thought it would be slower going for me.

  122. Kitty Page

I purchased the book but I have some questions. At one point you state not to eat fruit after 2:00 yet the daily meal plan shows fruit at dinner. Also there is a section where you state that there is unlimited meat and vegetables, yet you stress portion control. also, I absolutely cannot stand yogurt. What can I use as a substitute and can fruit juices made with natural fruit and no sugar be used as a substitute for eating fruit? Can I order a menu to use for food ideas yet not pay if I do not order the prepared food? Is Sweet-n-Low not a good substitute-you mention Truvia? Thank you. I want to start as soon as possible but need to ensure I am getting it all straight.

  123. Channing

    Thank you!

  124. Janie

Hey sue I am going to try and combine two books in one for faster results. The other book I am using is the Elite Weight Loss Package I ordered it off the internet as well. I love it I never feel hungry with this diet. Eating the right foods and sticking with the 17 day diet in a combo would work. I too cannot go with out eating since I am constantly cooking for my family. If you think you would like to try the other book as well I can send you the website. I dont think you should give up but just try and think positive. Its never easy but with these two books I think it will help me in the long run.

  125. Janie

Hey Lindsey I am not completely sure if skipping extra yogurt or anything else will hurt your diet but I do know that a book I got called Elite Weight loss Pkg helps with substitutions and such. And I too used to be a “party girl” and I tried getting a vodka and sprite zero or a vodka and coke zero. Vodka and Rum are lighter in calories as well as the zero calorie mixer or chaser. This helps me not when I drink. I dont drink the heavier liqours anymore do to the calories and sugar intake. I hope this helps you some.
    Janie

  126. Janie

Hi there ladies. It too has been a difficult process for me to lose weight. I have 5 children and they were back to back so no time to recover. I am looking into trying this book as well and I hope to get some feedback on if it really works. For a diet plan I am using the Elite Weight Loss Package book I purchased a couple weeks ago. I love it I have lost inches already. I noticed Debbie you said you didnt like green tea well there are alternatives such as a cleansing tea or a detox tea. I know those 2 are very similiar to green tea. I prefer the cleansing tea over the detox because of the taste. The book I am using has all the ideas or substitutes for every type of person. Even my children are eating healthier.

  127. Terri Sinclair

Pam, I know many who have that much to lose! You can email me if you’d like and I can give you some tips!

  128. Lindsey

Hey fellow dieters! Came up with a couple other questions that I wanted your feedback on. First, I work full time and am a full time student, so there are times when I dont eat everything on the menu. Such as my second yogurt, or sometimes even my fruit serving. I was wondering if not eating everything that is listed is actually hurting me?
My other question is that I am 23, and am a bit of a party girl. I have not yet drank on this diet, but I do have 2 friends birthday’s coming up. While I am not going to go wild by any means, I am wondering if drinking is totally going to ruin the point of the first two cycles?

  129. RiverGirl77

The book doesn’t say you aren’t allowed to have artificial sweetener but you are supposed to have it in moderation as the sweetness can trigger other cravings. Creamer is not allowed on the First 3 Cycles but my husband does have about 1 tbsp in his coffee 3 times a day and has had good results. I would not advocate this as I am one to stick to a diet pretty closely and do not want to take a chance at hindering any possible weight loss, try you coffee with the probiotic milk…you never know. Hope this helps

  130. Sue

Okay I am off….It was to hard…..I don’t think I will try it again…but I wish all of you the best….

  131. mustangangela

No nuts the first 17 days

  132. bRENDA

Howdy, I was wondering if during your journey you used any artificial sweetners, or drank diet soda?? I love all the foods in the book, but i love my coffee with low fat creamer and truvia. Also the green tea with one pack of truvia. I am having Pepsi one withdrawls, which is sweetened with splenda. Do you have any idea if any of this stuff is allowed??

  133. brenda klanke

yes the probiotic foods are also
low fat acidophius milk (1 cup)
yakult small 50 cal bottle (found bye the yogurt)
breakstone live active cottage cheese (half a cup)

  134. brenda klanke

yes truvia(found it by the equil and splenda)is allowed

  135. Channing

I started the diet 3 days ago and weighed myself today and have lost 6lbs in water weight already! Even though it is really hard I have stuck straight to it and when I see the results it feels amazing. Now that I have survived the first 3 days, and can see and feel the results, it is getting much easier! I am very excited to meet the final outcome.

I do have a question: Can we eat walnuts on a salad in the first 17 days?

  136. LG

I ordered the book the same day and did not receive it. I called a few weeks ago only to find out my order did not go through (I also got a receipt) and had to re-order the book, just got it today. Maybe there was something wrong with their system that day.

O and the book is amazing so far. Well worth the wait 🙂

  137. mustangangela

Hey Sue don’t give up I swear the first day is the hardest. If you get hungry I eat a little bit of protein.I buy this chicken from cost co its already cooked but fyi don’t buy the frozen one it is to salty but a few bites and you are not hungry.I swear it totally helps.I have a few tricks to help on this diet if you want to know then let me know.

  138. mustangangela

Hey I’m on the 17 day diet I have lost 25 lbs my first 15 days. I am exercising every day I love this diet. My ? is it ok to use the spray butter on your veggies it has 0 calories 0 fat its the I cant believe its not butter. It tastes really good on veggies.I almost feel like I’m cheating.Has anyone else lost that much weight.

  139. Sue

I think this is a very boring restricted diet…I am on day one and I am hungry. I think I may have just wasted my money but I will give it a chance.

  140. RiverGirl77

Yes, 17 days per cycle, if you don’t have the book I really suggest you buy it then you know exactly what foods are allowed on each cycle as well as having some great recipes (I love the chicken soup, changed it up by using ground turkey instead of chicken and the kids loved it).

  141. RiverGirl77

I have just finished Cycle 1 and I am down 16 lbs. I feel sooooo good but I am terrifed that this will all change with the addition of the starches in Cycle 2. Did you notice a slow down in your weight loss or did you feel any different?

  142. RiverGirl77

I too am not much of a yogurt/cottage cheese eater. I live in Canada and I am not able to find the cottage cheese of milk they talk about in the book. Here is what has been working for me. I eat both of my probiotic servings at one time and I have them at lunch because I HATE salad and cannot fathom cooking an entire hot lunch and then again a dinner form my family later in the day. I have 1 cup of fat free plain yogurt with 1 tbsp of sugar free jam and 1 cup of frozen berries. Now that I am starting cycle 2 I am just going to add granola to this on my even days to meet my needs for the natural starch. Killing 3 birds with one stone: 2 probiotic servings, 2 fruit servings (before 2:00pm) and my 2 starches. Hope this helps

  143. Lindsey

Hey there. I am one of the pickiest eatters ever, but have been sucking some of it up. However, I am wondering about the probiotic. I hate cottage cheese, REFUSE to drink asafnsdjbfjbsdgbj milk, and cannot eat plain yogurt. The smell and texture make me sick. It says you can have sugar free yogurt w/fruit, but I have searched all over and cannot find it. However, I did find 4oz fruit yogurt with 7 grams of sugar and is fat free, low cal. Is this ok? Should I replace my fruit with it? Should I eat it before a certain time to process and burn the added sugar? Or should I just eat it for breakfast and my snack, and add some time to my workout? Basically it is the only thing that I can eat to meet my probiotic serving.

  144. mp

Thank you! I, too, have a history of gorging on sweets and fats. Cookies, candies, cakes and ice cream has been an addiction my whole life. If that category of foods was removed from the planet, I’d be thin! Normal, healthy food was never my problem. I don’t like salad dressing, sauces on anything, salt/seasonings for the most part, dont’ look for bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. I just like the natural taste of things and am a protein eater, so you can imagine how much of the fats and sugars I was routinely consuming to get to where I was.Really unhealthy. But I need to stay on this thru maintenance bec. it has to become a way of life for me. Today is day 17, and it seems I’ve now lost 9 and I’m happy. That last two took a while to come off. I just went shopping for Cycle 2 foods and am trying some new recipes with the allowable foods for 1 and 2. I did a lot of journaling and self talk getting ready for cycle 2. Looking forward to putting oatmeal and legumes back into my diet since they were both staples for me whether I was dieting in the past or not. Thanks again for the support. YOu sound very motivated and that’s why you are succeeding. Good job!

  145. Margaret Little

Hi I am on Cycle 1 day three, where do I go next? Is it 17 days per cycle? Therefore would do cycle one for 17 days and then more to cycle two for 17 days?

  146. Margaret Little

Hi, I have been on the diet for 5 days now, have ordered the book. But I seem to be allergic to the yogurt. The soy free yogurt is 140 calories and 6 g fat per 6 oz. Any suggestions.

  147. Margaret Little

I just started about a week ago. I have ordered the book, not in yet though. I seem to be allergic to the yogurt. The soy free yogurt I found has 140 calories and 6g fat (6oz). Would you know what I can substatue for the yogurt?

  148. Cindy

    Hi Pam,

I cannot emphasis enough that you should buy the book, but what essentially happens is you complete Cycle 1 to cleanse your body, then Cylce 2 is to begin the body confusion by eating Cycle 1 one day and Cycle 2 the next, which includes an increased variety of meat/vegs/fruits and adds two carbs daily (brown rice, oatmeal, corn, etc…still no bread, but a lot of other stuff). So you alternate between the two cycles for the next 17 days…it keeps your metabolism confused and working harder trying to figure out what’s going on. I haven’t made it to Cycle 3 yet and don’t know all the details, I tend to just focus on the Cycle I am working on until I am about to go to the next. I also have a good bit of weight to lose, so once I finish with Cycle 3, I believe you start all over again until you get where you want to be. Cycle 4 is maintenance for life. You are good Monday through Friday lunch and you can have the things you love in moderation on the weekends – basically one “favorite” meal a day and being good the other meals over the weekend. Friday night you go out to dinner, then on Saturday breakfast you are good and maybe go out to lunch with friends and be pretty good for dinner, Sunday go to brunch and be good for the remainder of the day – however you want to work it out and then back to Cycle 1 on Monday, Cycle 2 on Tuesday, Cycle 1 on Wednesday and so on. It’s so easy. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can do it. I actually didn’t start excerising for the first ten days, but after that point I had so much energy, I was ready to go. I have been walking from 45-60 minutes daily. Everyday. You just have to know that you can never go back to your old ways, but you don’t have to give up the foods you like forever either. I think it’s brillant and very healthy.

  149. leigh

There is nothing gimicky about this book. It comes after years of research because everything else is not working. If you take notice, Weight Watchers has a “new” progam. I saw the food on the Doctor’s or Oz and it is almost exactlty like this diet…with the exception…you have to count those damn points!!!

  150. Cindy

You don’t have to eat grapefruit or oranges. He does speak to this issue in the book.

  151. cb

Yes. Dr. Moran talks specifically to vegetarians in the book.

  152. Cindy

You can snack on fresh veggies until you heart is content…all day long. Just keep in mind, that the first Cycle is only for 17 days, not forever. You can do almost anything for 17 days…it gets easier and easier very quickly.

  153. cb

New studies disagree with that school of thought. University of Florida has studies that prove it is better to get it off quickly – it keeps people motivated and when studied later, they had kept it off. As long as you aren’t doing something stupid – this diet is anything but stupid and if you read the book you will understand that it is amazingly healthy – the way everyone should eat.

  154. Cindy

You need to add some more protein. The diet in the Cycle 1 allows unlimited vegs and protein (limited to turkey, chicken as far as meat goes) of course, this should be within reason.

For breakfast, I am not an egg eater, so I have yogurt and a anitoxidant power berry mixture of blueberries, strawberries and pomegrante seeds (you can get these pre-packaged at Trader Joe’s – they aren’t on the list of fruits, but they are such an amazing antiox that I throw them in anyway) with a little Truvia. Sometimes I mix it all together (yogurt & fruit)… other times, I don’t.

For lunch I typically have some baked chicken – I use different spices and sauces to get different tastes – the book has only a few recipes, but one of them is for barbqued chicken or I use a Mrs. Dash’s Italian blend or sometimes a chipolte blend – just switch the tastes up. I use a lot of balsamic vinger/olive oil (love it)- those little spray bottles are great – only one calorie per squirt – you find them with all the other dressings. I spray it right on the chicken once I cut it into pieces – it’s sooo good. I combine the chicken with a hearty spinach, tomato and cucumber salad, but you can have all sort of veggies/lettuces. I normally have my second fruit with lunch – typically an orange or 1/2 grapefruit so I can get my vit c in for the day.

For dinner I have been making turkey burgers with an egg, garlic seasoning, onions and a little worchester and then topped it with Trader Joe’s organic fat-free mozarella. It is so yummy – another good sized salad. I’ve made orange ruffy and tapilia a couple of times also. Kids really loved it. Also, the book has an amazing taco salad recipe that is to die for…YUM! Remember…the cylce is only for 17 days. But you will carry these foods/recipes on with you forever and will begin to add different foods along with way.

I end the day with another yogurt – it feels like dessert. Remember…no carbs after 2pm- for me this is the hardest rule – I just forget.

I start the day with the warm lemon water and it totally works and drink nothing but water all day long. I just cannot drink tea, but continue to be having great success. I snack on carrots, celery and red/yellow/orange peppers. There is a dip recipe in the book I haven’t tried yet.

I just made the most amazing turkey meatballs. I used one pound of ground turkey and put some onions, garlic salt, sugar-free ketchup, a little sea salt and pepper, and some oregano and parmesan cheese (almost NO fat and allowed on the diet). I made the meatballs and put them on a pan that has holes in it so the fat could drain down to the lower pan. I baked them at 375 for 10 minutes and then turned them over and baked them about another 7 minutes. I sauteed fresh onion in a little olive oil and added a little garlic salt and then added one 28 oz can of Trader Joe’s low fat, organic Tuscon Marina Sauce. I let all that simmer for about 10 minutes and then gently added the meatballs and covered them with the sause and simmered it all for about 15 minutes. I ate three of the meatballs with sauce with a little parm on them and I could swear I was eating pasta. It was amazing!!! My kids loved them. Nice change of taste – all totally organic and almost completely fat free. This recipe made about 15 or so meatballs and the 28 oz can of sauce made just enough to cover it all. This way I can have some leftovers for tomorrow.

Which brings me to another point, you must cook protein in advance. I always think about what I am going to make over the next couple of days and make batches of chicken or now meatballs or turkey burgers. You need to have something at your fingertips immediately if you get hungry and protein is the answer so you don’t make a bad choice and can’t wait to fix something – you can just toss in the micowave and heat it in an instant and you are good.

There are a lot more options in the book – fish, beans…stuff I don’t care for…a bigger variety of vegs that you can have also. I am a picky eater, but for those of you love fish and almost any veggie…you are in for a treat!

  155. cb

Good for you, Leah. Get the book, it is so simple and not only talks about the diet, but gives good nutrional advice as well. I am having great results. In the first phase you cannot have bananas, kiwi, pineapple…sugary fruits. Just oranges, apples, berries (all kinds), red grapes, grapefruit, stuff like that. Get the book! It will become your bible. The best thing is that you don’t have to count calories or points.

  156. Cindy

I realize that in this country we all have freedom of speech, but this website is about helping people who have been trying to do better in life. If you don’t like what you are reading…get off the site and go make negative comments somewhere they are appreciated. We are trying to support one another.

  157. Cindy

You are 120% right about the sugar, Mia. Salt is also really, really bad. I have naturally low blood pressure, so I have never even worried to much about salt, but Dr. Oz had an amazing presentation on Oprah the other day about what salt really does to you insides…yikes!

The good thing about giving up sugar is that you lose that desire for sweets within just a few days. On this program, you can eventually have a bit now and then, but I find I have lost my taste for it unless it is fruit.

I have used sea salt for a long time, but now with the all the freshness of the vegs and herbs I am using to cook with, I rarely even pick up a salt shaker any longer. I do add a bit (with sea salt you really only need a very small amount) to turkey when I am cooking it and still need a tiny bit on eggs, but I am amazed how I have let this bad habit go without even realizing it happened.

  158. Cindy

With all due respect, I couldn’t disagree less. This book is worth every cent. The results are amazing and I feel wonderful, which keeps me motivated (isn’t that the hardest part??) to keep going. I have never felt better. Have you actually tried the program??

  159. Cindy

You need to stick with it. What is better than feeling that great?? You need to look into clean eating, which is essentially what this is. I will never go back to the horrendous way I used to eat – I was a huge junk foodie and sugar addict. The chemicals and toxins that are in processed foods are outrageous – I am doing my best to go all organic (food, makeup, shampoo, soap)- why work so hard to eat well and then put toxic stuff on our bodies,, right? Go to ewg@ewg.org to find out about the products you use – it will open your eyes!

Anyway, I am having great results (significant amount to lose) as is my daughter (very little to lose). I feel so great and have so much engery, there is no way I will stop. Don’t give up. It really works! You will get to a point that you feel so good and the weight starts to drop off that you won’t even need the book anymore; however, I do read mine several times a week just to make sure I stay on track. It helps me to stay focused. HANG IN THERE!!!! Good Luck!!!

  160. Tracy

Weight watchers is filled with all kinds of additives and sugar. It works because it is straight calorie cutting. You are probably sick because your body is detoxing from all the crap (especially sugar). Mine does that too. But if you stick with it, you’ll feel amazing. It does take more time for people with an addiction to sugar or caffeine, and for people with less weight to lose.

Like Gary said, this really isn’t rocket science. This diet is all about moderation and healthy choices. I’ve done a variation of the first 17-day cycle for many years when I’m trying to get into bathing suit shape or lose a few pounds after Christmas. It always works (heck I’m still wearing a bikini after 3 kids at age 43 – and yes, it still looks good!).

The detox can be rough – but smooth sailing after the first few weeks or so.

  161. mp

I’ve been on the diet for 14 days, have had some weight loss but expected it to be more impressive. I’ve only lost 7 lbs. and the cycle is almost over. I’m seeing other people losing 9 lbs, 11 lbs…. in a WEEK. I have followed it to the letter, exercised daily, had veggies for breakfast, lunch and dinner, have not had one thing not on the program, have not over-eaten, had the lemon water, 2 Liters of water a day, have the probiotic in pill form since I can’t have lactose, taking pill form of green tea, don’t take meds, no thryroid issues, and yes, I have a lot to lose so I should be a good candidate for a more impressive loss … I’m a little discouraged. I thought the average was 10-15 lbs for people with no extenuating circumstances like me. My clothes really don’t fit all that much better. On the bright side, I haven’t felt this good in years … joints feel great and hadn’t before, no inflammation, sleeping great. Love the way I feel in general. This is a very healthy diet.

  162. cbarnes18

I have been on The 17 Day Diet for 3 weeks now and have lost 22 lbs by just following along. It is easy and safe. The best part is that I feel so great!! Waking up early, alert and in the best mood. I agree with many people about just putting down the cookies and walk. It isn’t that easy for everyone. I have tried everything. I ended up using my points for doughnuts and missed fruit and veggis on Adkins. I am someone who needs direction initially. I don’t want to think about it and this is perfect for that first phase. THIS IS DEFINITELY A LIFESYTLE CHANGE! But it doesn’t mean you never get to have your favorite foods forever. You just learn how to do it right. The book teaches you how to do that. Ultimately in Cycle 4, you are good Monday through Friday lunch and then you get goodies on the weekends – you don’t go crazy, but you can have pancakes, pizza and alcohol…moderation is what it’s all about. This is how thin people live…they eat pizza, just not one everyday…or even every month. My skin looks great, my clothes are starting to get really loose and people are beginning to notice. The tape is very helpful and doable during these winter months. I have about 50 lbs. lose, but I have no doubt I will make it this time. The first part is the hardest, by day ten or so you are getting tired of what you are eating, but you can do anything for 17 days. I am a very picky eater, so for those of you who are not, it will be a breeze. When you realize how your body is responding, and how great you feel, it is so worth it! GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!

  163. John Glowacz

My wife and I started your 17=day diet and so far am pleased with it. We viewed the 17-day exercise video and decided it was for much younger people than we are. We are 73 and 69 years young. Maybe you need to consider a workout video for senior citizens.

  164. brenlamb

Currently waiting on the book, but am wondering if artificial sweetners are allowed on this diet??

  165. Blondie

Could someone please explain what else I can eat as a probiatic food? Yogurt and sauerkraut is all I see in the book. What kind of yogurt? Is there anything else I can substitute for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  166. WendyGay

P.S. have you tried White Balsamic vinegar – it is awesome.

  167. WendyGay

Morning ‘all. have been on 17 day diet for 13 days, lost 9 lbs. Feel great, although getting tired of chicken and fish. Happy to see phase 2 in a few days. Ihave read and reread the book and see you keep cycling 1 2 3 until you reach your goal weight then on to 4. This way you keep fooling your metabolism over and over. I have started to be more creative with my cooking to make things more interesting but only by using herbs etc. I have not seen this weight in many years so I know it works for me. Koodos to all – keep on trying……………

  168. cnnjnnbnn

Hi Leah, It’s worth it to buy the book. It’s a quick easy read and lists all the recommended fruits and food for each phase. I also like the recipes in the back of the book. I wouldn’t buy the exercise DVD though. It’s really hard to do. I’ve lost 26 with this diet and love it. The fruits I’ve been using are oranges and apples, but you can also have berries, grapefruit, peaches, pears, plums, prunesand red grapes.

  169. cnnjnnbnn

Hi Mary,I’ve tried several diets with no long term success- South Beach, Atkins, etc. I even worked at a Nutrisystem Center many years ago. I started the 17 Day Diet in November and have lost 26 pounds- even through the holidays. I love this diet! I was anemic before I started the diet but no more. I’m never hungry, and I’m not bored with the menu. I use the recipes in the back of the book which are very filling and taste great. The book is an easy read and really makes sense. Give it a try! Don’t buy the exercise DVD though. It’s really hard to do and goes too fast. Good luck!

  170. Terri1962

Count your blessings you did not waste your money on this book. I bought and tried the diet and got sick right away. I never get sick, ever. Try weight watchers this is a gimmicky diet that you won`t hear nothing about in a few years.

  171. Pam

Thanks so much. That was the main question that was making me wary of this plan. Doesn’t seem like anyone has been on it long enough to see if repeat cycles do work. I really don’t want to wait a few months to see if anyone tries it, so I guess I’ll have to jump in or use a different plan. Thanks again!

  172. RiverGirl77

You actually only do 3 cycles of weight loss, the 4th cycle is only for when you reach your goal weight. If after 3 cycles you need to lose more you have a couple of options. 1. you can go back to cycle 1 and follow with cylcle 2 & 3 2. go back to cycle 2 and follow with cycle 3 or
    3. stay on cycle 3 until you reach your goal weight.

I think that the first 2 choices are the best if you have alot to lose like I do as you will see faster results but cycle 3 is alot like other diets I have been on and I always lost weight that way too, it seems the 3rd choice doesn’t follow the 17 day diet theory of changing things up to keep your body “confused” but it will work because it is still keeping you on a healthy, balanced diet that encourages excersise. Hope this helps

  173. Pam

I can’t find the answer to my question about the 17 day diet on any of the comment sites I’ve read. How does this diet work if you need to lose 100 lbs.? Once you go thru the 4 17 day cycles, how does the weight loss continue? If you stay on the 4th cycle doesn’t that go against the 17 day theory? Do you repeat from cycle 1 until you lose what you need to? On the Dr. Phil show they started a challenge with people who need to lose more than 20-30 lbs., but there was no explanation about how to do this long term. No where to ask questions about it on his website. Hoping someone who has read the book knows the answer. Thanks.

  174. Tami

I so much agree with you. I tried this for three days and got very sick. This is not a way of eating specially if you get heartburn easily. The lemon water, dressing and tea is a bad mix that can lead to heartburn in some.
Just stick to healthy, portioned eating and plenty of workout time and you will see results. Nobody gets fat eating one cookie, it’s the other bad stuff that follows after you decide, well I’ve been bad so I’ll just keep going by having that piece of cake, the candy bar etc..

In the end you just have to find what works for YOU I guess. 🙂

  175. RiverGirl77

I love the 17 day diet! I have been on it now for 9 days and have lost 11 pounds. I feel more energetic, less bloated and I havn’t yet felt hungry. My husband is also doing it and he has only 15 pounds to lose and has lost 8 pounds already, proves that you don’t have to have alot to lose for this to work. Good Luck All!!

  176. Terri1962

Yes I would say that is probably what happened you lost to much potassium. I noticed I have been going to the bathroom a lot more lately as well. The longer I am on this diet I am more convinced it is not healthy.
I never get sick, so much as a cold, now I have bronchitis. I may have to try something else, I just don`t feel good on this diet.

  177. Jo

“I don’t like this”…..”I don’t like that”….”I saw the book on Dr. Phil”…IF YOU PEOPLE WANT TO MAKE A CHANGE THEN GET OFF THE COUCH AND STOP WATCHING DR. PHIL..DO EXERCISES AND IT DOESN’T TAKE A BOOK TO TELL YOU PEOPLE WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU TO EAT AND WHAT IS NOT…YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE INTERNET THAT YOU ARE MOSt LIKELY ALREADY PAYING FOR TO TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BE THIN AND HEALTHY…geeze

  178. Lynn

Wish I could get this book. Shipping to Alaska is not an option on the web site

  179. GAgal

It’s possible. Potassium and sodium are lost through the urine. Low levels of either/both could cause cramps.

  180. Terri1962

    Mary

My mother was on Coumadin and that is a very strong drug, it put her in the hospital. I would tell you to try Weight Watchers, it is one of the best and you can eat a good balance of foods. I am on this diet in the first cycle of it and I don`t have any health problems, this diet is very hard on me you can not eat bread, pasta, cheese, any processed foods or sugar. I would not recommend this diet to anyone that has health problems.
You can eat anything on weight watchers just in moderation.
I did this diet because I needed to detox my body otherwise I would have probably done weight watchers.

  181. GAgal

    Mary,
I have always heard that Coumadin dosage is regulated by your “normal” diet. In other words if you consistently eat only one green vegetable a day then your dosage reflects that. If you decide to increase and maintain a “consistent” increase in green vegetables then your future dose of coumadin should reflect that. The key is DAILY consistency in green consumption. Call your doctor and tell him/her your plan to include more healthy greens in your diet. You will probably need to have your INR checked more frequently at first. There should be very few reasons to not be able to do this.
    Good luck!

  182. GAgal

    Art,
Maybe you could try Crystal Lite watered down at first and then gradually get to pure water. They actually make a Green tea one that I find refreshing. Or add a bit of lemon or orange juice to your water to make it a bit more palatable. I’m sure the “purists” would disagree, but taking a step at a time to get there is better than nothing.
    Good luck!

  183. GAgal

Do you drink the Green tea WITH the meal or afterward? I have seen both stated. Thanks and good luck!

  184. GAgal

I agree about eliminating sugar. There is nothing good about it and does increase inflammation in your vessels leading to increases of heart disease, stroke, arthritis, etc. However, I have never had a “sweet” tooth so I very, very rarely eat sweets. My coworkers think I’m nuts passing up chocolate or whatever is being passed around. So my point is for me just giving up sugar won’t cut it. I need more portion control (I’m not too bad), but mostly my metabolism has shut down! I exercise 3 times a week, either treadmill or tennis. My diet is mostly protein, complex carbs, low glycemic index foods. My thyroid, vit D levels etc are perfect! I look great on paper. I am hoping the green tea and increased water intake will be the trigger I need.
I believe everyone is sooo different and I hope everyone will continue the journey to find out what works for them.

  185. Bernadette

    bonnie,

grapefruit is an optional fruit. You do not have to eat it on this diet. The diet allows 2 fruits, apples, oranges, pears, there are plenty of choices. Also, the book has a whole page on the statins and grapefruit/juice. It should not stand in your way.

  186. Bernadette

Received my book over the Christmas break. Started Phase 1 (first 17 days) and now on day 5. Am down 3 pounds already. Teaching myself to like green tea. Currently drinking Tetly Green Tea. Also started eating Greek yogurt for the first time. Love Chobani greek yogurt. Much thicker than American yogurt and at first I didn’t like it. Tried a different flavor and love it now.

6:00 am Pre-Breakfast drink: large glass of warm water with lemon. Book states it gets your digestive juices started.

8:00 Breakfast: Frozen Stir Fry veggies cooked in a frying pan sprayed with Pam. Once ready, pour organic egg whites (bought at WholeFoods) over the veggies. Cook well and flip when ready. Topped with salsa or add a piece of fat free cheddar for added flavor. Excellent flavor and very satisfying. Tea and small banana.

11:00 am Apple (2 fruits must be eaten before 2pm per book)

1:00 pm Lunch: Large salad with a can of Bumble Bee Solid White Tuna in water. Make the salad colorful green leaves, yellow and red peppers. Small bit of olive oil and balsamic and you are ready to go. Green tea and a Greek Yogurt for dessert (strawberry bannana)

4:00 snack: celery & carrot sticks

Dinner: Salmon steak, steamed broccoli/califlower with balsamic glaze. large glass of water with lemon.

So far so good. Have not felt deprived at all and have on occasion eaten a second portion of protein.

Hope this helps someone to give it a try or to not stop trying this diet.

    Good luck all!

  187. Haley

    Hello everyone!
I am Haley and I am 18, I am currently on day 4 of the 17 Day Diet and so far I havnt had any results (I weigh the same). Both my mother and my sister, who are overweight, are doing this diet as well and have seen results. I am only 10 lbs away from the weight I should be! I was wondering if anyone new why I havnt gotten results, seeing a decrease on that scale is my motivation!
    Thanks,
    Haley!

  188. rojam792

How much weight do you need to lose? and.. are you exercising? That may help jumpstart your weightloss… just a thought!:)

  189. rojam792

why is that? I think he has a lot of great things to say! In fact, I haven’t heard of one person who has tried the diet complain at all!!!

  190. Leah

This is great, and this is what I have been doing! My only concern is the fruits I eat, which are the best and which aren’t so good for you? Please anyone help. I’ve lost 5 pounds since New Years but am considering purchasing the book but I would like to know more on whether it really works or not. But again, I am not looking for a miracle. I have exercised daily and ate healthy! I just need more recipes and a larger variety of healthy foods to eat and cook. Any opinions on the book or ideas to keep going would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  191. Nancy Field

I have now been on this 17 day diet for 4 days and have not lost ANYTHING AT ALL. I have followed it to the letter. I don’t understand it.

  192. karen

I’m with Gary. I would add that you should look at the ingredients of the foods you buy. If you don’t cook with it, don’t eat it. If you wouldn’t find it in a well stocked kitchen, don’t eat it. Try to eat foods with the fewest ingredients you can. Yes, it’s more expensive, but I think you will find yourself eating less, because you body is getting the nutrients it needs and not junnk it can’t process.

    Best of luck to all!

  193. WendyGay

Yay Gary, that is soooo true………..

  194. Gary

Why is it that so many comments are “I cant find the book, and I need HELP”. Here’s the help you need in a nutshell…

STOP ALL PROCESSED FOODS… no sugary stuff, no white rice, no white bread, no regular pasta, no luncheon meats (LOADED with salt and nitrates, etc)

START EATING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES… Think GREEN, GREEN, GREEN! Broccoli, Asparagus, Spinach, Lettuce, cabbage, etc… As for fruits, be smart about it, because some of them have a LOT of sugar. 1 banana a day is smart, 1 orange is good, 1 apple is good… Change it up, just dont eat loads of fruit.

START EATING LEAN PROTEINS… Fish, skinless chicken, red meat ONCE a week, shrimp; cook using grill method, broil method and even saute, but with a spray oil.

START EATING WHOLE GRAINS… Real oatmeal is great, but not the just add water to the sugary oatmeal crap that kids eat. NOT GOOD! Add some fresh fruit to your oatmeal, like blueberries, strawberries. As for bread, ONLY whole grains, preferably multi-grain with high fiber.

START EXERCISING… no matter what you do, what diet you choose, you will HAVE to exercise in some way, shape or form. Even some exercise is better than none… try tennis lessons, karate lessons, join a swim club, take golf lessons (then WALK the course, not ride).

It aint rocket science folks… STOP putting crap in and then feeling CRAPPY! Start eating right, exercising regularly (3-5 times a week) and you will lose weight! And feel better! And probably LIVE much longer!

    Peace~

  195. LAILA

I am overwieght too I AM trying my best and I am wachting the show Dr.PHIL

  196. baker

MIA, YOU ARE RIGHT ON WITH YOUR COMMENTS. PEOPLE WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT BUT DON’T WANT TO CUT OUT THE CRAP FOOD AND WALK…

  197. Edith

The first step is to stop living in denial. I told myself that I didn’t eat that much, my system had slowed down, my medication was making me gain weight. I had always been thin enough. Then I changed jobs and gained 30 pounds. My knees started hurting so bad that I feared I had bone cancer. After a doctors visit and no bone cancer my dr told me I could help my knee pain by losing 15 pounds…what me overweight! So I filled out a lose weight calculation based on my now 161 pounds and found out exactly how many calories I had to be eating to weigh 161 pounds. I was shocked. I couldn’t possibly be eating that many calories. That was the end of my denial. I decided I could do 1200 calories and I started counting calories. When you get serious and make up your mind to eat x amount of calories you get creative and real…I would rather have a big chicken breast and vegetables than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Also after you find out how many calories is in Ranch dressing you will be finding a new fat free Ranch that you like I sure did. I lost 21 pounds and my knees quit hurting and I didn’t exercise one single time. I did this from Feb 10 to Oct 10. I went from a size 12 going up to a 14 back to a size 8. I feel good and my belly fat is gone and I am working on my back fat now. I would love to lose about 6 more pounds so I may now add in some walking or Wii to help with that. Get real and you will get real results. Good luck! You can do it.

I havent received my book yet. Thanks for the breakdown! How long do you stay on Phase 1?

  199. Rita

I am 65. Had total knee replacement 24 mo. ago and gained 45 lbs. My 2 grandaughters are only 24 and 22 and weigh at least190 and 280. We need help desperately but cannot afford the 17 day Diet Book. My grandaughters are so beautiful Iam worried for their health and mine. Will this diet work if you can’t do the excerises? Is there any other way to get this book? Thank you

  200. Jan B

I am on Day 4 of the 17-day diet. The last 2 days I have had mild muscle cramps in upper back and legs. Do you think I might have lost too much potassium? Is there a connection?

  201. Mary

I am on coumadin and I was told not to take to many green leaf vegetables or green tea. Since the 17 Day Diet has a lot of green leaf veggies and green tea, what should I do? Is the 17 Day Diet good for me?

  202. Brenda Lohr

Dr. Phil says its so good but I am having the same problem . I cant find it and im ready to do something about my weight. And i really wont to try the 17 Day Diet.

  203. Becky

After ordering the book (from the official site), I received it within 4 days.
I started the plan today and I am really having to force the green tea down. I’m not sure how important it is to the overall success of the plan; I am also not sure if the bottled green tea works. I am anxious to see results….I’ll keep you posted.

  204. Anna

I do not like to diet. I maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle and yet I could not shed the last 10 pounds after giving birth to my son a year ago. No matter what I did or how much I exercised (which I love to do) the scale would not budge. So I decided to give this a try. I have never been good at restricting my carbs and I knew this would be hard. But actually it’s not that bad and after 1 week I have lost 9 pounds!!!!! I cannot believe it and am so happy. I finally can fit into clothes that I haven’t worn in 2 years and am excited to see what comes next. Like I said, I normally don’t ‘diet’ but after giving this one a SUCCESSFUL try I felt the need to comment on it.

  205. KC

Just wanted to let everyone know that I too saw Dr. Phil and the Doctors about the 17 day diet so I ordered the book and the DVD. I started the first 17 days, 7 days ago and I have not exercised yet however I have lost 8.1 pounds already! I have been concentrating on trying to follow the diet very closely and I have not been hungry! Over 8 pounds in 7 days is awesome for me – and I like a lot of others feel like I have tried everything. I am determined to make this work but time will tell. I’ll check in again later if anyone is interested.

  206. Terri Sinclair

I was one of the original people on the diet from The Doctors Show and I can attest the diet works. It’s healthy food and the initial quick weight loss gives you motivation and encouragement.

The diet is lean protein, veggies, fruit and whole grains. No gimmicks. No fads. No crazy weird combination! Just clean food to a lighter you!
    Simple!

  207. WendyGay

Hi Janet: I ordered the book online on the 17 day site. They said there would be a couple of days delay in shippin as they had 14,000 hits the day Dr. Phill show aired. I have since received it, and am on day 5. So far so good.
Also they have a 1 800 number if you prefer to call.

    Good Luck

I struggled with weight and yo yo effect for years until I discovered floss diet -oral restrictive device. This simple tool helps me resist overeating. I lost 34 pounds in 14 months and have not gained any of it back. Still have few pound to go but, for the first time in my life I am in control and I control how much I put in my body. The device saved my life

  212. Bonnie

I am on cholesterol lowering meds and am not supposed to eat any grapefruit or its juice. Is that issue addressed in the book because that fruit seems prevalent?

  213. Susan Taraby-Huot

I have been looking at the 17 day diet. I do not eat meat nor fish. Can I follow this diet ? In addition can I substitute, green tea[ from time to time] with coffee which I love.

  214. Deanna

Mary, the key to eating well and losing weight is mostly mental. You have to want to lost weight more than you want to eat that “cookie” or “chips”. Once you start empowering yourself with making good decisions about the food you purchase and eat, it becomes habitual. You’ll start looking at the grocery carts of people around you and think “my gosh, I’m glad I don’t eat that stuff!”. Start out with baby steps. Portion control is key. Depending on what and how you eat – these 3 things are critical: STOP eating fast food if you do that on a regular basis, reduce or eliminate sugar in your diet (this is not just table sugar – look at the sugar content of all items purchased), and stop eating processed foods.

A good check is: If it didn’t come from the ground or have a mother, don’t eat it. Don’t try to do everything at once. If you eat fast food frequently, eat processed foods at every meal, and eat a lot of sugary items and try to eliminate them all at once, you’ll fail. However, if you eliminate one of those items, say fast food, do not replace it with an increased intake of processed food.

    Good luck!

  215. Mary Doering

I also watched it on Dr P show today. I need help and i wish someone would help me also. I hate looking at myself .8 years ago i lost one breast from cancer and gained 65 LB.
And i don’t no what to do. I have tried walking and not eating as much. I really need help. Please!

  216. pru

So what else is new?! Not this, obviously. Just check it out in comparison to almost any reasonable eating programs. Lots of veggies, reasonable amount of fruits, small portions of meats, chicken and fish…limit or omit salt and sugar etc etc etc. By the way, 2 eggs ok if you don’t have high cholesterol, not high blood pressure. To the person who doesn’t like green tea – really it has no taste but look for it with pomegranate or cranberry – much more tasty. The truth is…..consume fewer calories that you burn – you lose weight. wish there were a “magic plan” – there isn’t!

  217. kim

on the menu it lists breakfast ,,lunch,,dinner,,snack do you only get the evening snack or can you have a morning snack and an afternoon snack too?

  218. arthur thompson

what is the best thing to drink i do not like water art

  219. Pano Halvah

Not healthy to loose weight quickly

  220. Irene

I ordered the book – gave CC # etc on Nov. 30, 2010.

Am anxious to get it. Can you help//????

  221. Debbie Price

    I don’t like green tea…..what do I drink then?

  222. Julie

There aren’t any points. An example breakfast 2 eggs (yolks included unless you have high blood pressure) + 6 oz. probiotic yogurt

lunch – tossed green salad with 1 tsp vinegar 1 tblsp olive oil + 1 fruit serving. Fibrous fruit such as pears, apples, peaches, apricot, grapes, etc.

Dinner – 1 serving lean meat (size of palm of hand) and as much veggies as you want. Steamed minimally to retain nutrient value, no butter, limit salt. 2nd probiotic yogurt for dessert.
Basically all you need to count is (2) probiotic servings and (2) fruit servings as snacks or accompanying lunch. Green tea is recommended following each meal..and works great. As much veggies as you want but without adding butter or salt. Use herbs such as crushed garlic or cayenne pepper for seasoning. 8 (8 oz) glasses of water per day. The book is great. Basically no carbs or refined sugars the first 17 days. You are getting sweet siety from the fresh fruit. Good luck!

  223. Sylvia

I couldn’t find the recipe on the Dr’s site, could you?

  224. m. ridner

don,t waste your time or money, what a joke, very disappointed after reading especially since i paid $28.45. i understand why he only sells it over the internet , if anyone could read only minimal info. they would put it back on the shelve.

“Hello, my name is Doctor Carrie Nelson. Like Dr. Mike Moreno, I am a family physician and I’ve been practicing for 20 years. Based on the frustrating experience of attempting to assist my own patients in attempting sustainable weight, I think the 17-Day Diet has some real potential. First of all, it seems to be safe – which is my highest priority in looking at a weight loss plan. Second, theories on strategies for long term success with weight loss are still in flux. It’s really quite unclear which is better for the long term — slow and steady versus an initial more rapid weight loss approach I hope you appreciate my opinion and insight – check out my more health advice at my blog: Doctorcarrieshealthyliving.com

    Hi Mia,

Just thought id drop you a line to say how right I think you are. I truly believe sugar is our enemy, it causes constant hunger, and general ill health. I know it tastes good and can be totally addictive but if more people could do as you did and just try to train themselves to live without it we would be a much healthier society.

    K

  227. Sherri

I haven’t gotten my book yet but want to start eating phase 1 food. What is on phase one menu and what are “points”?

  228. Mia

I saw Dr. Moreno too. He looked very familiar to me.
I think he is selling another book of hope, nothing else.
All you have to do is to stop eating the junk.
No more cookies, pies, cakes, sugar and fried foods.
Walk or swim every day and you are going to feel much better. I had a knee pain, a swollen ankles and after I stopped eating sugar, I have no pain, no swollen ankles, lost 20 lbs and feel great. Sugar is the main cause of inflammation in your body and it is also the reason for diabetis and obesity.

  229. Pauline Fischer (anonymous)

I saw Dr. Moreno on the Doctors today. They just gave a bit about the 17 day diet, without any details. How depressing, without the book I cannot experience the details of 4 different steps to change. I am very ill with Cardiac issues. I have a Pacemaker and am on a miriad of meds. I have had Diabetes for 32 years, I cannot get this under control with 70/30 Insulin along with “R” on a sliding scale. I have tried every diet on this Planet with no sucess. I currently weigh 290 pounds. I have Anemia, when it was discovered I had a Hemaglobin of 6 and was immediatly given 3 pints of blood. I have Pulmonary Hypertention and Sleep Apnea. I have been hospitalized twice with Kidney failure. Arthritis has me “chair ridden” my knees are “bone on bone”, I can walk to the bathroom with a walker. BOTTOM LINE I could die any given day from just 1 of my diseases. My highest weight was 323. It has taken me 2 years to lose 33 pounds. I follow my diabetic diet to a tee…but Dr. I need help. Please. Thank you,

  230. virginia bussell

where can i buy the book 17 day diet by dr. mike moreno i live in indiania.

  231. Jody Ann

I have ordered the book on the official website and it has been shipped, haven’t received it yet though should be arriving very soon. I can’t wait to see the recipes. You can also go thru “The Doctor’s TV show” website also.
The power cookie recipe is on the doctor’s site also.

  232. Janet C. Martino

Amazon.com is out of “THE17 DAY DIET” AND DOES NOT KNOW WHEN IT WILL BE BACK IN SUPPLY.
Why is this “so popular” new item not in bookstores. I cannot be in the audience and hope to hit it on a day when you are giving it out. Just not fair to give it this much publicity and make it so difficult to purchase. On the two progams of your show I watched, you say one can purchase the diet on a link from your show. I even went to the actual book site and do not see where to purchase a copuy.
Please advise further. Am I missing something

  233. Connie

I am at the point in my diet that i have just leveled out . I want to lose 15 more pounds and i am at a point were not sure what else to do to get the last 15 pounds off.

  234. sheri paul

what about those of us who cannot tolerate the roughage in certain vegetables. this weight loss program seems healthy and easy to follow, but some people just aren’t able to handle the fiber. I would like to hear the doctor’s take on that.

  235. Melanie Thomassian R.D.

The new research is very interesting indeed, I’d definitely like to see more studies in that area. I think if people drop a lot of weight initially, but keep going with their new changes, rather than slacking off, then it’s totally fine. It’s when the yo-yo cycle begins that it becomes “unhealthy.”

  236. jlboissonneault

The problem is once you get to the maintenance you’re bored again. Here is a simple rule that works. Learn how many carbs are in certain foods and don’t eat above 100g of carbs a day.

  237. Jim F.

The new research is interesting and deserves some more analysis, but typically most people frown on rapid weight loss as being an indicator of an upcoming rebound… but maybe this is not necessarily the case.

  238. Spectra

It sounds a little bit gimmicky, but it might be kind of a good plan if you need a lot of structure. I personally did the calorie-cycling thing often when I was on Weight Watchers and had plateaus. I would eat near the top of my Points range one day and near the low end the next day. By doing that, I was able to keep my body guessing and I would break out of the plateau.

On the issue of rapid weight loss being good/bad/whatever–if you are very overweight and change your eating habits drastically, you are going to lose a lot of weight right off the bat. Most of it will definitely be water weight, but yeah, it can be encouraging to see that big initial drop in weight. I wish they’d explain that more to people on shows like “The Biggest Loser”…most of them lose like 20 lbs right away and then they lose only about 2-3 lbs the next week despite the fact that they are still following the plan.
