The Basics of Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers encompasses healthy nutrition, effective calorie control, and livability. The goal is to lose weight and keep it off. They have a "Four-Way Approach:

The Weight Watchers approach believes that dieting is just one part of long-term weight management. A healthy body results in a healthy lifestyle (both mental, emotional, and physical health). Weight Watchers does not tell you what to eat, but provides the information, tools, and motivation to help you make good eating decisions.

Momentum

This is a program introduced in 2009. Momentum focuses on eating more filling foods and is essentially a combination of both the Flex and Core plans. Adherents still count Points but will have an easier time by eating foods with a satiety value.

  • 5 servings of fruits & veggies
  • 2 servings of milk products
  • 6 glasses of "liquids"
  • 2 tsp healthy oils
  • 1-2 servings of lean protein
  • 1 multivitamin a day
  • Choose Whole Grains when possible
  • At least 30 minutes of activity a day most days of the week
  • Limit sugar and alcohol

What About Exercise?

Weight Watchers strongly encourages exercise. Weight Watchers on-line allows exercise activities to be logged, and calculated into your daily points values. The Weight Watchers website also has a large number of workout plans and exercise information.

Does Weight Watchers work?

Weight Watchers is a sustainable (2 pounds weight loss per week) and workable program that has been successful for over 40 years. It is common to see a number of people try different diet fads, only to return to Weight Watchers when things don't go so well. It is also refreshing to see that Weight Watchers will NOT accept people who are on (or 5 pounds above) the minimum weight range for age and height.

The Weight Watchers plan works out to about $5 per week (with a 3 month plan) - which is actually quite comparable (if not better) than some competitors (if you compare feature for feature). In addition to this, Weight Watchers is completely free of the commercial overload and clutter that comes with other sites such as eDiets.

Downsides?

Virtually none to think of. No diet program will work for 100% of the population - but Weight Watchers is most certainly one of the best choices you could make.

Weight Watchers Online

Weight Watchers Online provides the interactive resources to follow the plan step-by-step online. Weight tracking, recipe database, meal ideas, a restaurant guide, and many other aids.

Weight Watchers on-line has a very strong community - chat rooms, numerous message boards and recipe swaps. All are extremely active and very helpful.

Note: There is also an option to use "Weight Watchers Mobile" - this is a set of powerful tools for your iPhone, iPod Touch, mobile phone or handheld computer that has all the tools from the on-line program. It allows you to synchronize all your information with your on-line Weight Watchers account.

As far as we know, this is the only weight loss program to have such a feature.

Monthly Pass

Available in certain areas, Monthly Pass allows access to unlimited meetings each month, and access to eTools. This is the lowest price available per week for access to some of Weight Watchers' best tools.

Weight Watchers Meetings

The strength of this program is the ability to meet regularly with others - in an environment of mutual encouragement and support. This is a powerful motivator to stay the course - and many people prefer this format of the Weight Watchers program. The Weight Watchers website has a complete database of all meetings worldwide. If you are not able to attend meetings, you can always follow the plan step-by-step online.
